North Sister

2016, May 10th, I and my friend Jon Costa desided to climb North Sister. This peak is known as one of the most technical mountain in western America. And its elevation is 10085 feet (3074m).

We started climbing at 2:30 AM. That was dark but I had climbed Middle Sister, which is located near by North Sister, with Nick Wogan 3 weeks ago, (That was super fun) so I kind of remembered the approach route. We kept walking good pace, and we reached the crampon point at 6 AM.

We brought 4 snow pickets, 2 ice screw, and a lack of cams for the protections. But actually, we should not have brought cams because it was snowy rather than rocky. From the parking where is in south side of the mountain, it looked very rocky, however our climbing route was north side of the mountain so there were still lots of snow and ice. We had to traverse really steep, like at least 65 degree slope. We used a 50m rope to climb safely, and basically we climbed simultaneously with running anchors to save time, and in the steep section, we belayed each other. It took 5 pitches to summit. Snow was actually really stable. it's hard and it's way better than mushy snow. But the traverse was really long and my leg and arms were nearly pumped because of so many kick steps.

We summited at 11 AM and we began to climb down quickly because we were a little nervous of snow condition. Mushy snow has higher avalanche dangerous, and also it's slipplerier. Fortunately, our descent route was north face, so the snow melt slowly. We rappeled at Bowling Alley, which is 70 ish degree couloir. The rappel anchor that we used was over 1 meter rock that was covered by icy snow. And then, we climbed down (mainly traverse) simultaneously. But for some reason my right crampon's linking bar bended, and it became loose and unstable. So we climbed down with leap frogging method. We came back to the safe point at 2:30 PM. At this point, it had already passed 12 hours since we began climbing. And we were tired. At 6:30 PM we finallly came back to the sweet parking area. We were literally exhausted.
